Stars, Stripes & Solidarity
Runners and Walkers: Looking for a great way to show your true colors? The month of July offers you a great new virtual event sponsored and created by the Utica Roadrunners. The event is called Stars, Stripes & Solidarity and gives all the chance to proudly show their patriotism as an American. As we all stand together as a country and a running community, this new event has many opportunities for you to continue to meet your running goals as we recently just lost the Boilermaker Road Race until 2021. We have many unique new items that will be issued as prizes and lots of great swag created by our friends at CNY Racing!
What to expect: based on elements of the American flag, this event has a series of challenges to be completed during July (e.g. run 3 miles(5K) to represent the three colors of flag, etc.). The event has something for all participants, from runners to walkers, those just starting out, and crazy ultra-running minded folks. The list of challenges will be sent via email and/or posted on social media.
Community: The UR "Fireworks Committee" will be helping us stay motivated via dedicated Facebook and Strava groups.
Prizes: The UR Fireworks committee will select random participants who are active via Facebook or Strava groups for event prizes. We will be unable to provide prizes to those who chose not to interact via these platforms, but we still welcome all to attend in any way they choose to engage with the event.
Event Merchandise: while the event is free, event specific merchandise will be available for sale during registration. We will announce a gear pickup date for sometime late July or Early August. We will not ship merchandise unless participant is active duty military.
Proceeds: a portion of proceeds will be given to an organization that supports our nation's Veterans. We are currently assessing organizations that are still able to execute their programs during the pandemic. We welcome suggestions from our members. If suggestions are provided, please specify how the organization is handling the pandemic or provide a reference to their webpage.

History of the Run Against Racism:
Education, relationship building, openness and exploration of the communities around us can lead to understanding and to combat racism. During the pandemic, the Utica Roadrunners created a route throughout the heart of Utica for members and friends to run/walk at their leisure as a way to jointly take a stand against racism and injustice. Along the route, participants were able to learn about different places, people and events that celebrate the rich history and contributions of Utica’s black community through temporary historic signage. The route took participants through parts of Cornhill, the Parkway District, East Utica, the Broad Street Corridor, Historic Bagg’s Square, Downtown, and the Oneida Square Arts District. While running/walking, we encouraged participants to have meaningful conversations about race or discussions about recent events ... or if they prefered, to run/walk solo in personal reflection or listen to a podcast or audio book. We also hoped they would take in the beauty of our city as they explored places they may not have noticed or visited before. While paying homage to our local Black community, the route was also created to celebrate the Black lives lost throughout the country.
We ran in remembrance of them:
• The route was approximately 8.5 miles long to honor the life of George Floyd, reflecting the length of time a police officer in Minneapolis had his knee on his neck
• There were 27 stops in total to honor the life of Breonna Taylor, who was killed in Kentucky right before her 27th birthday
• UR encouraged people to run the route on Sundays, to honor Ahmaud Arbery who was killed on Sunday, February 23, 2020 while running in Georgia
Push URself
Push URself will start June 1st and end June 28!
From the ultra-marathoner to the noncompetitive recreational runner to the walker, we all move at our own speed. The Utica First Insurance Push URself is a challenge for every pace because ultimately your own pace is what you are trying to beat. With so many virtual mileage challenges out there, now is the perfect time for a change of pace and to Push URself to get faster.
Push URself is an individual competition to improve your pace for a specific distance over four weeks in June. Upon signup, you will submit your target time you want to improve for a goal distance of 1mi, 5km, 5mi, 10km, or 15km. Runners will run the same route each week for consistency to try to improve your time each week. Walkers will submit their cumulative weekly distance. Runners can run as many times as you want each week, but can only submit one time a week. Submissions must be received by each Sunday night throughout the month of June.
Signup today at https://runsignup.com/Race/NY/Utica/URselfQuaRUNtine!
It is free to participate, but $10 will get you a Utica Roadrunner exclusive limited edition neck gaiter of your choice. $15 will get you two gaiters. You also have the option to purchase official Push URself gear. Samples of Glukos Energy and BOOM! Energy bars will be available when you pick up your swag (while supplies last). A portion of the proceeds will benefit local businesses.
We all could use a coach to encourage us to stay motivated and on track. That’s where the Facebook group and Strava Club will help. Post your selfies and inspiration to keep everyone moving toward their goal. Weekly prizes will be awarded to participants along the way!
Push URself will start June 1st and end June 28, but registration will remain open until June 14th.
